Why Choose Curraghchase
We've designed every aspect with your comfort and safety in mind
Ancient woodlands with minimal crowds. You'll hear birdsong, not traffic. Perfect for quiet reflection.
Loops under two miles with gentle slopes. No scrambling or technical sections. You control the pace.
Clear signage, rest benches every quarter mile, parking near trailheads, accessible restroom facilities.
Low-impact walking improves balance, strengthens legs, and boosts mood. No expensive equipment needed.
Located in Limerick, Curraghchase Forest Park spans 600 acres of managed woodland. It's been welcoming visitors for decades, and we've worked with local rangers to create routes specifically suited for older adults.
The trails aren't difficult or boring. They're thoughtfully laid out through beech and oak forest, with views across the surrounding landscape. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour on the shorter loops — enough time to feel the benefit without exhaustion.
We recommend visiting during daylight hours, wearing proper footwear, and bringing water. The terrain is well-maintained, but it's still woodland — sometimes muddy or wet depending on weather. That's part of the experience.

Getting Started
Start with one of our recommended loops. The 1.2-mile Beech Walk is most popular for first-timers. Read the guide to see what to expect.
Proper footwear makes a difference. Bring water, sunscreen, and a light jacket. Check our packing checklist for everything else you might need.
There's no rush. Sit on a bench whenever you want. Take photos. Enjoy the quiet. You can finish the loop in an hour or two — whatever feels right.
What visitors experience at Curraghchase
What Visitors Say
"I wasn't sure I could manage a walk anymore after my knee surgery. But the Beech Walk is so gentle, and there's a bench every few minutes if you need to rest. I'm going back next weekend."
These principles guide everything we recommend
Every recommendation is tested. We know these trails are safe for older knees and hips. That doesn't mean boring — it means thoughtful.
You're not alone on the trail. Connect with other hikers, share tips, and build friendships over a shared love of woodland walking.
These woods have been here for centuries. We hike quietly, stay on marked paths, and leave nothing but footprints.
